SNA congratulates the Establishment of Microelectronics Technology Consortium and pronounces in the Official Launch

Semiconductor Nanotechnology Alliance (SNA) warmly welcomes and supports the establishment of Microelectronics Technology Consortium (METC). Our Committee Leadership was graceful to deliver speeches and exchange with key stakeholders from academia, research institutes, industries and public bodies in the microelectronics sector at the Official Launch on 9 November 2022.

Prof. Philip Chan, Senior Advisor to the Deputy President and Provost, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and Honorary Chairmen, SNA expressed his excitement on the establishment of METC, “We take pride that Hong Kong’s universities and field experts cover comprehensive streams and skillset in microelectronics research, namely, design, fabrication, packaging and testing.”

“SNA recently announced the Microelectronics White Paper to introduce the international leading position of microelectronic research in Hong Kong and provide suggestions on infrastructure, talent development and commercialization to the government,” Prof. Chan continued, “We believe the continued support from government can facilitate the knowledge transfer of research’s achievement to commercialisation and technology collaboration.”

Prof. Tim Cheng, Vice-President for Research and Development, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Co-Chair of the Technology & Innovation Committee, SNA remarked, “Microelectronics has been a focused area of HKUST since its founding day 30 years ago. The refresh of ecosystem creates more opportunities for microelectronics development.”

Prof. Martin Wong, Dean of Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Chair of the EDA Sub-Committee, SNA noted in his speech, “We are not working on something that is 10 years down the road, we are working on something that is immediately usable. For Design Automation, the University ranks number 1 in the world of CSRankings this year. We are confidence that the research excellence can be successfully transferred to industrialisation and technological advancement.”

SNA is excited to witness the establishment of METC and fully supports on the initiatives to collaborate and promote the microelectronics industry, joining hands with ecosystem stakeholders to develop Hong Kong into an international innovation and technology (I&T) hub.
